This month I wanted to address the barrage of articles out there that have to do with “the top trends for job seekers in 2016”, or “things every job seeker should know” and the like.
While you may find some useful nuggets amongst the clutter, the articles all seem to say the same things:

This month I wanted to address the barrage of articles out there that have to do with “the top trends for job seekers in 2016”, or “things every job seeker should know” and the like.
While you may find some useful nuggets amongst the clutter, the articles all seem to say the same things:
1) This or that field is growing, dying or the next big thing
2) Make sure you have the latest app on your phone
3) You might end up working from home
4) Competition for jobs is fierce
5) You may or may not need a degree
6) This or that resume format will make or break your job search.
I could go on, but will stop there. It’s no wonder job seekers are dazed and confused. I don’t care if you are trying to get into the field of translational oncology, or are a sales and marketing professional downsized at 40, it’s very daunting to fire up that reddit account and have all of this conflicting, and usually disheartening news, pushed at you.
It’s not that these folks are outright lying to you. It’s just that they are presenting things that aren’t the most helpful. I would advise you folks to understand when you are looking at information that is an inch deep and a mile wide, to not take it to heart. By that, I mean, don’t abandon your plan and chase after something they say, just because it’s in print.
One specific example is “this or that field is dying, or growing steady or about to explode”. This one is tricky because it may be true, it may not be true, and it may be true for some others but not to you. Or it’s truthfulness depends on what part of the world you are standing in.
So, what happens is, we change plans and go after the shiny thing, and while we remain ignorant of all the variables, having only a shallow understanding, we get frustrated because nothing happens.
Since the whole point of me writing for you guys is to decrease your frustration level, I will give you a short list of all you really need to know about finding a job in 2016. I will expound on these in future blogs, but without further ado, here is Coach Tom’s 2016 list of things you need to know:
1) You must understand what value you have to offer
2) You must research and understand WHO can hire you
3) You must be able to communicate your value
4) You must be WILLING to communicate your value
5) You must understand that you must repeat step 4 until something happens
6) You must be ready to make adjustments as you go forward
And lastly, you must understand that there are no secrets, and no magical advice or wisdom that will enable you to prevail. It’s everything, done well, and with persistence.
