Hello Everyone!
There is an old saying, that goes “He who hesitates is lost”.
This is very true in life. If you spend too much time dithering, and calculating what might or might not happen, if you do or don’t do something, chances are,the opportunity will be gone before you get off dead center.
This is even truer in job search. Very often, the unknown paralyzes us. We spend countless hours trolling the web for job opportunities, then we stare at the listings we find, and we wonder if we should submit our application. OR, if we think it’s a fit, we stare at the CV we have, and wonder if it’s in the right format, or does it confirm to what the gurus say is a good resume.
Two of the worst things you can do: First, to not do anything because you can’t make a decision, or do random things because you feel you aren’t doing anything productive UNLESS you are sending out CV’s and applications at a rapid pace.
Second,to decide it’s too much to deal with today and go play on Facebook.
If you procrastinate and hesitate because you self-sabotage out of a fear of success or hard work, get professional help.
If you procrastinate and hesitate because you don’t want to work hard, grow up.
If you procrastinate and hesitate because you don’t know what to do, I can help you with that.
Much of what you can do to beat the procrastination monster can (and should) be done before you even start the job search:
1) Make a list of companies who can hire you, regardless if they are hiring now
2) Make a list of people within those companies you can contact
3) Build specific letters of introduction, voicemail scripts, and resumes for each type of company on your target list
Honestly, if you aren’t willing to do that, you will struggle and go in circles.
After all that is done, then and only then, should you switch to job hunter mode and begin the campaign of constantly contacting those folks within your targets who can help you.
Now comes the hard part. This is where you have to tap into, and maybe even develop, resources you don’t have yet to move forward. You must do the following every day:
1) Send letters, emails, and InMails to your targets
2) Attend networking events
3) Pick up the damn phone and talk to people
And here, lastly, is the hardest thing you have to do, but do it you must:
WHEN EVERYTHING YOU JUST DID DOESN’T APPEAR TO BE WORKING, YOU MUST HAVE THE MENTAL TOUGHNESS TO DO IT ALL AGAIN THE NEXT DAY
This where otherwise talented people struggle. Maybe you don’t, maybe you have a sports background, or martial arts training or some life experiences that teach you to dig deep. If that’s you, great. What I often see though, is people folding like lawn chairs when their first efforts bear no fruit… or their second, or their third.
This cannot be you. You have to gather yourself every day, and get it in your spirit that you are a talented professional who can bring value to an employer, and then pick up that phone and go present yourself, again, and again.
Procrastination and hesitation will only be beaten if you attack them with organization, a plan, and the courage to work that plan. You are already skilled at your vocations, but job search requires some different skills that you must develop and then apply. And if you need help with that, my contact info is below.
Until next time, I wish you all the best.
